Jonathan Békés has been playing the cello since the age of 10. He is currently studying at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) under the guidance of Howard Penny. In 2014 he completed a Bachelor of Music (performance) under the direction of Julian Smiles. He has won various awards at competitions and eisteddfods and has attained his A.Mus and L.Mus both with distinction. He is recipient of the 2016 Accenture Australia Scholarship and the Sydney Conservatorium's Corinna d'Hage String Scholarship.

Jonathan has taken his cello across the world having performed across four different continents. He is a cellist in the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and performs regularly with the Australian World Orchestra, including their tour to Singapore in 2016. He is a founding member of the world renowned Estivo Trio who themselves have toured and performed extensively across the world. Jonathan has been the principle cellist of the Australian Youth Orchestra and the Sydney Youth Orchestra.

Jonathan has appeared as soloist with numerous orchestras around Australia. In 2011 he played for a full house at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall as part of the HSC ENCORE program. He has played for many of the world's great cellists and chamber groups including Steven Isserlis, Pieter Wispelwey, the Borodin String Quartet and the Goldner String Quartet. He has worked closely with such figures as Stephan Dohr, Anthony Marwood and Timothy Young as well as with members of Ensemble Liaison, the Australian World Orchestra and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Jonathan is in great demand as a performer, chamber musician and teacher across Australia.

In his spare time Jonathan is a passionate Sydney Swans supporter. He is a keen squash player, an avid golfer and loves to get outside to go hiking and mountain biking.
